The nice thing about being a pet owner today is the spectacular variety of canned food options available. Of course, the downside is that the vast majority of your options aren’t very good at all. The best wet dog food is easy to digest, with a well-rounded nutritional profile and a taste/texture that appeals to a pooch’s hunting instincts. Sadly, there are just as many canned dog foods that are downright disgusting. They have streaky globs of pure fat, dangerous chunks of bone, or even mold in cans that haven’t expired. Yuck!
In this guide, we’ll teach you how to shop for a good canned dog food like a pro. We’ll explain all the essentials of shopping and buying, and introduce you to our favorite canned dog foods on the market today!

Best Wet Dog Food (2018)
Purina’s Beyond Grain formulation is the best of the budget options when it comes to canned dog food. It’s not organic like our other recommendations, but it’s relatively all-natural and much better nutritionally than anything else at its price point. Get this if you’re on a tighter budget but don’t want to compromise on safety or nutrition.
This is a truly grain-free food, unlike most others at this price. Chicken is the number one ingredient, and there’s no crappy filler or byproducts added. It contains a nice, broad profile of vitamins and minerals. Importantly, it’s sourced and produced entirely in America. You don’t need to worry about sketchy imports like you would with most of the other canned foods sold for the same price or cheaper. It’s appetizing, safe, and relatively well-rounded.
You definitely see better consistency and quality control with Newman’s and Organix, though. The products from those brands that we’ve included below are also more well-rounded in the nutrition department and have more of their vitamins and minerals sourced naturally. And, of course, buying organic is the best thing to to for your dog, the planet, and everyone else!
This Newman’s Own formula is the least expensive option we’ve found for a quality, organic dog food. It’s well-rounded from a nutritional standpoint, produced ethically, and quite reasonably-priced for an organic pet food. It’s a good midrange choice between the inexpensive Purina options and a premium formula like the Organix below.
What’s the difference between this and something like the Purina formula above? Well, going organic makes a big difference. Not only is it a better choice for the environment and for the sustainability of our food system, but it means much stricter nutritional standards and a strict ban on hormones and antibiotics in meat protein. Newman’s also has a better standard of quality control, in our experience. Each can is more consistent compared with cheap brands like Purina.
You can get it in chicken, turkey or beef varieties, as well as any of those in combination with liver. There’s even a liver-only variety, if that’s up your dog’s alley. All of them have a slightly wider nutritional profile than the Purina, though the Newman’s formula still supplements with a lot of vitamins and minerals rather than adding a broader base of real-food ingredients, which is what the nicer Organix food below does.
If you want the best of the best and can afford to spend a decent amount on canned food for your pooch, we think this Organix formula is the best wet dog food option out there. Like the Newman’s Own formulas above, all the varieties of this Organix food are produced organically, with no antibiotics, hormones, or artificial additives. It’s sourced responsibly, consistent between batches, and as safe as you can get in a can.
The biggest difference is in the nutritional profiles. The Newman’s Own formula above, like most pet foods, is relatively simple. There’s a meat, gravy element, and then some vegetables. It’s supplemented with a range of vitamins. This Organix formula is a superfood mix of things like blueberries, flax seeds, and coconut flower, among others. As far as things like health omega fatty acids and complete proteins, this is the best you can get in a can. We’re always on the lookout for products that are even more well-rounded in the nutrition department, but the Organix is the best we’ve found to date!
There are three different chicken options as well as turkey and a turkey/chicken combo. With that much variety, you’re pretty much sure to find something that your dog will find appetizing and enjoyable! We recommend the Organix to anyone who can afford it.
The most important thing you can do when you’re shopping for a new dog food formula is to know your animal. Sure, it certainly helps to do your research and consult our expert reviews to find the safest and most nutritious wet foods on the market! Still, you can have the nicest food in the world but some dogs just won’t touch it because of some particular preference. Likewise, even the most natural, organic ingredients can still be problematic for some animals, simply because of unforseen allergies. That’s why you should know as much as possible about your animal’s dietary needs, preferences, and history. Always keep a lot of allergens you discover, as well as any flavors or scents they find off-putting. Having a good sense of what Fido reacts well to and enjoys eating will help you find an appropriate wet food.
