Best Shampoo For Shih Tzu Reviews (2019)
Nature’s Miracle is a brand that makes a range of pet cleaning products, all using their signature enzyme formula. Instead of using harsh chemicals to deodorize and dissolve pet messes, the enzymes actually digest all the organic material that’s causing the stink in the first place! It’s natural, non-toxic, and surprisingly effective.
This shampoo uses the same enzyme formula as the company’s cleaning products. It’s a very effective deodorizer and a great choice for shih tzu owners on a budget. It costs a fraction as much as our other recommendations but still covers the basics well. It’s free of harmful ingredients, plays well with flea/tick treatments, and leaves coats and skin feeling soft and smelling fresh.
On the downside, some shih tzus may find this one a little too aggressive in the cleaning department. It’s also not quite as well-rounded or plant-based as our more expensive recommendations. The Earthbath and 4-Legger are a bit thicker in consistency, too, which makes them easier to work with.
Earthbath’s all-natural pet shampoo is our recommendation to the average buyer. It’s a more well-rounded formula than the Nature’s Miracle, and does just as good a job at deodorizing without the enzymes. You should find that this is even gentler on shih tzus without compromising on results!
What’s in this one? There are some gentle coconut-derived surfactants (cleansing agents), aloe and oatmeal for moisture and PH balance, then vanilla and almond essences for a fresh scent after the bath. Apart from water and a natural preservative agent, that’s it! You don’t get much more hypoallergenic than this.
We like the Earthbath because it’s a nice middle ground between inexpensive shampoos like the Nature’s Miracle and premium, organic products like the 4-Legger, which we know some pet owners won’t want to or be able to invest in. It’s all-natural, plant-based, and has a well-rounded formula that nourishes as well as cleansing and deodorizing.
If you want the best of the best for your shih tzu and can afford a little pampering, this 4-Legger product is currently our favorite for small, long-haired breeds. It’s expensive, but it’s both highly-effective and as good as you can get for your pooch and the planet.
The only ingredients in this one are essential oils, plant extracts, and saponified plant oils. There’s absolutely nothing in here which might irritate or aggravate a shih tzu’s fur, skin, or constitution. You certainly pay a premium to go completely natural, but there are clear advantages.
You also don’t lose anything in terms of effectiveness. The 4-Legger cleans as well as anything with enzymes or surfactants, and it does just as good a job at deodorizing. It also nourishes better than anything else we’ve found. We also love the fact that the natural lemongrass extract in it serves as a natural repellent to fleas and ticks.
Know Your Pet
Whenever you introduce a new food, supplement, or grooming product, it’s extremely important to bear your pet in mind. Your individual animal may have specific sensitivities or aversions that should be taken into account. We always recommend keeping a list of any allergies or sensitivities that you discover over the course of your pet’s life, so that you can be a smarter shopper each time you introduce something new.
Know Your Breed
While all good dog shampoos tick many of the same boxes (pet-safe, non-toxic, etc.), there are a few specific things to bear in mind when you’re choosing a shampoo to use with a shih tzu.
First of all, these are highly sensitive dogs. They have a quite delicate PH balance in their skin and fur, more so than other breeds. So, always be sure to choose grooming products that are neutral in PH.
It’s also best to go for gentler products without any soaps or detergents. Some gentle, plant-derived surfactants should be ok, but that’s as far as you want to go with cleaning power. It’s best to keep things gentle and natural.
Stick With Hypoallergenic Products
Shih tzus are fairly sensitive as a breed, as we’ve just mentioned, so we always recommend staying away from any aggressive, chemical-based shampoos and conditioners. All-natural, hypoallergenic products tend to the best bet for washing shih tzus without aggravating sensitivities or throwing off their PH balance. Stick to shampoos and conditioners that are mostly or entirely made with plant-based, all-natural ingredients. The ones that are specifically marketed as hypoallergenic are usually a smart place to start.
Look For Odor Control
Shih tzus can get super stinky in a hurry, as any longtime owner will know! That’s why you want to make sure that your new shampoo does a good job removing stinky oil buildups, leaving behind a much more fresh, palatable scent. All our recommendations are great in this department.
