Best Dog Shampoo For Shedding: Our 2018 Reviews
Our least expensive shampoo recommendation for controlling shedding is made by Oster. It’s an oatmeal-based, relatively natural product that does a surprisingly good job cutting down on furball production.
Unlike other inexpensive products, it’s produced in the USA, so you can be sure that it doesn’t have any sketchy, unsafe ingredients in it. All the ingredients are ph-balanced and biodegradable. There’s no alcohol, dyes, phthalates, or parabens. Vitamin B5 and safflower extract add some healthy oils and nutrients back into your pet’s coat, helping to prevent the dry, agitated conditions that contribute to shedding.
Oatmeal is a tried-and-tested ingredient for improving both skin and hair–even on humans! One key benefit it provides is reducing itchiness, which stops pooches from scratching and pulling out hairs.
It has a good consistency, produces a nice lather, and has a mild, gentle aroma. It’s not as effective as the Furminator or the Wahl, and the fresh smell doesn’t last as long, either. Still, if you’re on a budget, it’s a very suitable choice!
Furminator is a brand that’s totally made its name on reducing shedding, both with smartly-designed brushes and with matching grooming products like this dog shampoo. If you’ve done any kind of shopping for brushes and rakes, we’re certain you’ve seen their tools. They’re certainly marketed to an extreme, but they’re very effective–especially for the most severe shedders. This shampoo is intended as a companion to the tools. It’s a popular choice at professional grooming institutions and kennels.
So, what’s in this formula? Like the Oster shampoo above, the Furminator product includes plenty of ingredients to revitalize the coat and skin of your animal at the same time it reduces shedding. It also includes some surfactant ingredients that help release the undercoat and any loose fur more thoroughly than the strictly all-natural products we recommend. As a result, it’s incredibly effective without being unsafe. You actually get a lot more fur out at first before things calm down to a more manageable level. So, you may think at first that shedding is on the rise. On the plus side, it works more quickly than other products.
On the downside, this is the most chemical-y product we recommend for grooming. It’s perfectly pet-safe and relatively natural, but not all the ingredients are listed. There are “mild surfactants” which, while not harmful for pooches, are likely more aggressive than plant-based ingredients that you’d find in other shampoos. If your dog has sensitivity to chemical ingredients, you may find that the Furminator shampoo is a bit too aggravating.
We give this Wahl shampoo pride of place in our rankings because we think it’s the best balance of natural, pet-friendly ingredients and effective performance. It works practically as well as the Furminator shampoo above, but it’s a lot gentler, especially for puppies and pooches with sensitivity. It includes some more effective cleansing agents than the Oster, but they’re all plant-derived and less aggressive than those in the Furminator. It’s made in the USA, and includes only food-safe colors and fragrances as ingredients that aren’t plan-based. We recommend it to anyone who wants maximum shedding reduction without taking chances on dogs having a reaction to chemical ingredients.
Don’t Expect Miracles
Shampoo alone won’t stop shedding, and there’s no way to make shedding stop completely! Remember that shampoo is an important part of your grooming regimen, but that you’ll need to brush and condition for the best results. Your pet will still shed to some extent, but using these three tools in conjunction will cut down on the amount of fur your animal loses in a drastic way. Always pair your shampoo with a good brush and a conditioner!
Be Sure To Avoid Harmful Chemical Ingredients
Shedding-control shampoos are fairly chemical by nature. We only recommend pet-safe, non-toxic formulas, but if you decide not to use one of our recommendations, you may end up considering some products with harsh chemical ingredients. Many anti-shedding formulas are aggressive at best, and dangerous at worst. So, shop very carefully! If you don’t know what an ingredient is and can’t find out quickly whether it’s toxic to dogs, steer clear of it.
One easy step you can take is to stop using anything on your pooch that’s not produced in the USA. Imported products can be very dangerous, especially the generic ones from China. They don’t always declare ingredients, and even those that do still use chemicals which are deemed unsafe for pets over here.
Know Your Pet
As with any grooming product you purchase, it’s important to consider your specific animal when you choose an anti-shedding shampoo. If they have an aversion to certain scents, or an allergic reaction to certain ingredients, make sure to know that up front so that you can choose something that’s suitable for them.
