Nature’s Miracle Supreme Oatmeal Odor Control Shampoo & Conditioner

Nature's Miracle Supreme Odor Control Natural Oatmeal Shampoo & ConditionerClick for Price

We first discovered Nature’s Miracle in the quest to find an effective cleaning product for dog messes on carpet. The company’s enzyme-based cleaners are still our go-to method of pretreating carpet messes before making a pass with a cleaning machine. They do a wonderful job on stains and especially odors.

This shampoo incorporates a similar formula of enzymes to reduce odor-causing organic matter accumulation on your pet’s skin and coat during bathtime. It’s pet-safe, non-toxic and effective. It’s also very affordable.

On the downside, some sensitive breeds don’t do well with enzyme cleaners. This one’s also not as easy to work with as the Earthbath or 4-Legger. It’s pretty thin in consistency, and doesn’t work up as much of a lather.

Earthbath All-Natural Pet Shampoo

Earthbath’s all-natural pet shampoos are our recommendation to the average pet owner for a variety of reasons. They’re hypoallergenic, effective, and remarkably good at fighting odors. This shampoo is a nice middle ground between the inexpensive options that aren’t completely plant-based, and the premium (and pricey) all-organic options like the 4-Legger below.

The Earthbath formula is pretty simple–a combination of nourishing plant extracts and plant-based surfactants (gentle cleansers made from coconut, in this case). It’s hypoallergenic, pet-safe, and effective. While it’s not targeted specifically at deodorizing like the Nature’s Miracle, we’ve found that the vast majority of dogs do well with this one. However, it’s not quite as stellar as the 4-Legger, both in terms of effectiveness and ingredients.

You can get the Earthbath in a wide range of different variations, but the main formula is the same. The only significant difference is in the essential oil blends used in each. So, pick your favorite scent (and you’re dog’s favorite) and you’ll be good to go.

4-Legger Certified Organic Dog Shampoo

4-Legger’s certified organic shampoo is currently our absolute favorite grooming product on the market for a number of reasons. It’s made entirely from essential oils and plant extracts, some of which are saponified like a castile soap. They’re even gentler than the coconut-based cleansers in the Earthbath, but they’re just as effective. In fact, we think they do a better job! All those essential oils leave dogs smelling absolutely wonderful for days, too. We also love that the lemongrass extract serves as a natural repellent to fleas and ticks. Between having all-organic ingredients and a concentrated formula that allows you to dilute and get more mileage out of each bottle, we have absolutely no complaints about the 4-Legger. We think it’s the best choice for resolving your dog’s chronic odor problem.

Buying Guide

Avoid Harsh Chemicals

A lot of people are tempted to go for super chemical-y shampoos when they’re trying desperately to get their pooch to stop stinking. We get it! Doggie odors are no fun for anyone. Still, you can reduce and even eliminate them without resorting to using harsh chemical products. In fact, using synthetic formulas and artificial scents can actually make the problem worse in the long run. Like us humans, dogs have a finely-tuned system of bacteria living on their skin and fur, which actually help to prevent things like yeast infections and other unpleasant conditions. When these bacteria get out of hand, they certainly get stinky. However, the trick is to get your pooch clean without destroying their delicate ecosystem. Otherwise, you leave them more exposed to harmful bacteria and parasites in the environment.

Likewise, some owners think that the strong fragrances in chemical shampoos are a good way to keep strong pet odors from returning. Nope! Covering up the problem isn’t doing anyone any favors. While you definitely want your shampoo to leave a nice, fresh scent behind for a few days, strong chemical fragrance products can mask when your animal actually needs a bath. They can also be extremely harmful to both humans and pets. Stick with all-natural formulas that use plant extracts and essential oils as the only scent ingredients. They still leave a nice residual smell behind, and they’re non-toxic.

Know Your Animal

Whenever you’re introducing a new product to your pet’s routine, you should be sure to consider your animal’s particular sensitivities, scent preferences, and so on. If they seem to dislike a certain ingredient or smell, it’s better to steer clear of that–even if it’s not a clear allergic reaction. After all, you want your animal to enjoy bathtime!

Understand The Causes Of Odors

Dogs don’t just develop stenches out of nowhere. Sure, there are some breeds that are noticeably stinkier than others–looking at you, shih tzus! Still, pungent odors are easy to avoid when you stick to a regular, thorough grooming routine. Don’t expect any shampoo to magically eliminate odor if you only bathe your dog once a month. You should be giving your animal a bath every week or two (bi-weekly is the most realistic routine for most of us to aim for).

By keeping to a frequent grooming routine, you’ll be preventing the accumulation of oils, dirt, and bacteria which produces pungent odor in the first place. As long as you keep the oils and the bacteria that love them to a minimum, you can keep strong smells at bay. Make sure you stay on top of giving your dog their baths and use your common sense. If they’ve gotten particularly sweaty or dirty, they’re going to get stinky faster. Nip the problem in the bud with a quick bath!
