Earthbath All Natural Pet Shampoo

Earthbath products are the most budget-friendly option when it comes to all-natural, hypoallergenic grooming. They’re definitely more expensive than your average dog shampoo, but they’re still significantly cheaper than the premium, organic solutions we’ve recommended below.

All the ingredients in Earthbath’s formula are naturally-derived, pet-safe, and biodegradable. There aren’t any parabens, phosphates, synthetic dyes or fragrances. Instead, you’re essentially looking at a mix of coconut-based surfactants (cleaning agents) and moisturizing agents (aloe, oatmeal, olive oil). There’s nothing here that your average or even sensitive dog will react to.

Make sure you select the hypoallergenic formula when you buy! The listing we’ve linked to above also includes a bunch of other options. We’ve found that all the Earthbath formulas are safe and effective, but this one doesn’t have any essential oil fragrances which can in rare cases be an allergen.

Pro Pet Works Natural Oatmeal Dog Shampoo & Conditioner

This Pro Pet Works product is a combination shampoo and conditioner that’s a nice midrange choice between the all-organic, premium 4-Legger formula below and the inexpensive Earthbath product above. It’s an all-natural product that has mostly organic ingredients, plus a range of vitamins and nutrients to make it very well-rounded in the replenishment department.

There are a few ingredients in this that aren’t plant-based, though. EGDA and EGTA are generally considered hypoallergenic, but if you’re trying to avoid them, stick with either the Earthbath or the 4-Legger.

This is a good choice for pet owners who want something hypoallergenic but aren’t super concerned with going completely plant-based. We like it because it acts and feels like a typical shampoo (lots of foam and lather), without containing as many synthetic, chemical ingredients which can cause allergic reactions.

4-Legger Certified Organic Dog Shampoo

4-Legger Certified Organic Dog ShampooClick for Price

This 4-Legger shampoo is the most natural, hypoallergenic product on the market right now. Or, at least, it’s the most all-natural, pet-safe product we’ve found that still does a good job keeping pooches clean and healthy! It’s made entirely from essential oils, plus a mix of lemongrass, aloe, and rosemary extracts. That’s it. Everything’s certified organic and as safe and ethical as you can get!

This is the absolute gentlest product we’ve reviewed that still cleans effectively and nourishes fur and skin. It’s a lot like a castille soap for humans, such as Dr. Bronner’s, which is made purely from saponified plant oils. While the coconut-derived surfactants in the products above are very, very mild, they’re still surfactants. This formula doesn’t have any at all.

Of course, as with any hypoallergenic product, this is not a magically foolproof formula. There are probably some rare dogs out there who will react to it for some reason or other. We’re not going to pretend that there’s any perfect product for absolutely every animal! Having said that, we think this is by far the safest bet on the market right now.

You should also be aware that this is a very expensive product to use regularly. If you have a sensitive pooch, and are very concerned about eliminating even the slightest possibility of aggravation (due to plant-based surfactants), we think it’s worth it. It’s also quite concentrated, so you can dilute it and get a lot of baths out of each bottle without compromising on effectiveness.

Buying Guide

Look For Plant-Based Formulas

Most pets have allergic reactions to strong chemical ingredients and aggressive detergents in shampoos. Of course, some animals also react badly to certain plant extracts or essential oils. No ingredient is completely foolproof for absolutely every dog! Still, the majority of allergic reactions come from using harsh, chemical products on your pooch. That’s why we suggest sticking with grooming products that are entirely or at least mostly plant-based. Plant-based ingredients are better for the environment, gentler on your animal, and usually a more well-rounded way to maintain healthy skin and fur.

Know Your Pet

As we’ve just said, there’s no hard-and-fast rule when it comes to what is and isn’t hypoallergenic. The products we’ve recommended above are all completely pet-safe, but we can’t guarantee that your specific animal will react positively to every ingredient. That’s why it’s so important to know your pet! Do they have known allergies? Are there certain scents that they just can’t stand? Do your homework and make sure to keep a current list of aggravating substances so that you can avoid them when you shop for grooming products.

Be Prepared To Spend More For The Safest Products

There’s a good reason pet companies crank out so much chemical garbage. It’s cheap, and it does the job well enough for most people. It takes time and effort to develop a hypoallergenic, non-toxic formula that actually works as well as chemical blends. Otherwise, every brand would be making products wonderful as the companies we’ve suggested above. Sadly, that’s not the case.

With that in mind, you should be prepared to spend quite a bit more for something that’s made without any gross chemical ingredients. The shampoos above are definitely more expensive than your average grooming products. Think of it as making an investment in your pet’s health and well-being!
