AmazonBasics Single-Door/Double-Door Folding Metal Dog Crate

This AmazonBasics dog crate is the best wire design on the market right now. It’s not technically “heavy-duty”, but it’s a lot more heavy-duty than anything else for the price. We think it’s suitable for small dogs, unless they have a bizarre level of strength or are abnormally good escape artists. It’s sturdy, secure, and easy to take down and set up. We suggest it for owners who want to be secure but whose pets aren’t escape artists or super anxious. Don’t get this one if you have a big dog who’s going to be insistent, though!

Guardian Gear ProSelect Empire Dog Cage

Pro Select Empire Cage - LARGEClick for Price

This heavy-duty cage from Guardian Gear is a rock-solid, practically indestructible dog cage. It has thick, steel tubing all around, with reinforcements at all the key points (hinges, latches, etc.). There are a number of crates like this on the market, but the Empire has the best build quality and the best quality control we’ve seen to date. We also like the fact that you can put the casters on and off as needed.

However, we’ve heard of quality control issues from this one. Some buyers ended up with units where hinges were poorly-welded, creating weak points. We’ve also found that the cleverest dogs can figure out how to work the latches from the inside, although the vast majority won’t be able to do this. In short, while we think it’s the best non-travel model on the market right now, it’s not quite perfect.

Grain Valley Dog Supply Collapsible, Durable Dog Crate

Our final recommendation comes from Grain Valley Dog Supply. It’s far and away the best travel-ready dog crate we’ve found. Of course, it’s extremely pricey. Still, for the peace of mind it gives you, we find it fairly easy to justify the expense. You can also use it at home, so it’s not as if this is only something you’d use to fly with your animal. This heavy-duty crate is absolutely stellar. It’s made from sturdy aluminum, and the limited visibility windows help a lot with pooches who suffer from separation anxiety. We’re extremely impressed with the build quality, but that’s not entirely surprising with something made entirely in the USA. Is it foolproof? No. We’ve heard one or two reports of dogs managing to find their way out of it. Is it the best on the market right now? Definitely.

Which of these heavy-duty dog crates should you buy for your furry friend?

The AmazonBasics is a good, sturdy choice for folks who want something more rugged than your average wire cage, without going all-out on an industrial-strength model costing hundreds of dollars. However, big breeds can easily do a number on something like this. It’s only suitable for small breeds.

The ProSelect Empire is the best choice for the average owner who wants a rugged crate to use at home. It’s a lot cheaper than the air travel-certified model from Grain Valley, while being comparably sturdy. While quality control issues and a few design flaws keep it from earning perfect marks in our review process, it’s the best non-travel model that’s easily available to dog owners these days.

The Grain Valley is our recommendation to any owners who want a travel-ready crate. It’s certified for use on airlines and as sturdy as the ProSelect Empire. We recommend it for any dog, though nothing is entirely foolproof. At any rate, we think it’s the most heavy-duty, indestructible dog crate on the market that you can take on a trip.

Buying Guide

Here are some tips to help you be a smarter shopper when you’re comparing your options for heavy-duty dog crates:

Cast A Wide Net

For this guide, we’ve only looked at dog crates that are easy for the average person to get ahold of. We know that, realistically, most people are not going to be custom-ordering something from a kennel supplier when there are so many options conveniently available through Amazon. We’re confident that the models we recommend are the best you can easily find, but you should also know that the very best options are to be found from kennel suppliers. It’s worth making a call to your local kennel to find out how they get ahold of their crates, if the models we recommend end up falling short.

Don’t Count On A Warranty

Sadly, most products available easily to consumers have next to no warranty coverage. That’s just a fact these days. We’re on the lookout for any good companies that come along offering an indestructible dog crate with a solid warranty policy, but it hasn’t happened yet.

Know Your Animal

As with any piece of dog gear you buy, knowing your pet is the best thing you can do to make a smart purchase. Are they going to try and escape through brute strength, or are they a tricky pooch who can figure out latches? How heavy-duty a crate do you actually need? Answer these questions up front so that you have an easier time choosing between our recommendations.

Don’t Skip Training

While some dogs are always going to need a secure crate, remember that a crate isn’t a substitute for behavioral training and teaching your pet how to behave calmly when you’re gone. Investing in a reputable, effective training program will be much more worthwhile than buying a crate designed like Alcatraz! Even if you get a rock-solid crate with no sharp edges whatsoever, it’s not healthy for Fido to be constantly slamming against the walls or gnawing on metal. That’s why training will always be your best bet to keep doggies safe and secure.
