Best Orthopedic Dog Bed Reviews (2018): Top-Rated Therapeutic Options For Arthritis & Hip Problems

Best Orthopedic Dog Bed Reviews

Orthopedic dog beds are the latest thing in the dog gear marketplace. Just as we’re becoming more and more aware of the importance of healthy spinal alignment and pressure relief when we sleep in our human beds, vets are recommending that we pay more attention to the support and relief we give our furry friends in their beds–especially if your animal already suffers from a chronic condition such as arthritis. The best orthopedic dog beds offer back and neck support that pooches don’t get from traditional sleep surfaces. They also use memory foam materials like we have on our own beds to provide pressure relief and adapt to the contours of your dog’s body.

Below, we’ve put together comparison reviews of all our favorite orthopedic dog beds. We’ve included a range of options, from plain bolster-style beds upgraded with memory foam to more nest-like beds with wrap-around neck support.

Read on to see which orthopedic dog beds are the best on the market today, and to find out why we chose these specific models!

Pet Support Systems Dog Beds

Available in a range of sizes for small to large breeds and everything in between, these plain bolster-style beds have a familiar profile with a lot of modern tech going on under the hood. We think they’re a great choice for dog owners who want to give Fido some extra support and pressure relief without trying to introduce a neck cushion or anything fancy. We know that a lot of dogs actually prefer a plain, platform-style surface, so this is a nice orthopedic upgrade on that format.

Big Barker 7” Orthopedic Dog Bed For Large And Ultra Large Breed Dogs

This is a good choice for the biggest dogs who need maximum support as well as pressure relief. We know this is a big, expensive bed, but cheaper and smaller options will just pack down under the largest and heaviest animals. The Big Barker is sturdy enough to support even Great Danes, and has a headrest on one side so that dogs who want it can use it and those who don’t can ignore it. We don’t think there’s anything better for massive dogs.

Sealy Lux Quad Layer Orthopedic Dog Bed With Cooling Gel

This Sealy is a high-end orthopedic dog bed that’s comparable to the Big Barker, only not so supersized or expensive. You can use it for all but the very largest pooches, as long as you choose the biggest option. We love the layered construction, which mimics high-quality memory foam mattresses for humans. It combines a thick, sturdy support base with adaptive comfort layers closer to the surface. There are also gel and charcoal materials added in to reduce heat buildup and prevent stinky odors from accumulating. All in all, we think it’s a very nice (if expensive) midpoint between open platform beds with no headrest and wraparound options like the Serta below.

Serta’s Ortho Cuddler is our recommendation to dog owners with animals who like a wraparound bed they can nest in. It’s essentially an orthopedic version of the traditional stuffed bolster bed with wraparound sides. We like it because it’s a lot more supportive and sturdy than others like it. It’s also a bit easier to clean, since you can take out the main chunk of foam to throw the rest in the washer. It’s ideal for coaxing dogs who curl up into using a neckrest bolster!

Buying Guide

Always Buy American

A lot of dog gear produced these days is cheap, imported crap. While it may not seem like a big deal to buy the occasional generic import for your pet, there are some very good reasons to shop domestically. Imported dog foods can often contain dangerous additives, sometimes as bad as rat poison! Cheap toys from China are usually made with toxic chemicals that your dog can get sick from if they ingest scraps of fur or plastic.

The same goes for dog beds–especially the orthopedic ones! Orthopedic dog beds are made with memory foam, which is by nature a synthetic, chemically-derived product. All memory foam is going to off-gas fumes to some extent, especially when it’s brand new. However, CertiPur-certified foams made in the USA are tested and guaranteed to be free of the worst chemicals, and to produce a minimum amount of fume.

You can’t trust imported foams to be made without toxic chemical additives and flame retardants, so stick with American-made products with tested, certified foams. You’ll get a much better level of quality control and design from American companies, too, so it’s worth the effort! All of the orthopedic dog beds we recommend are made in the USA for these reasons.

Know Your Animal

Shop according to the size of your animal, bearing mind their breed. Most orthopedic dog beds come in a range of sizes, so you can find something close to an exact fit for your animal. Know your animal’s measurements beforehand, so you can make an informed choice.

Be sure to consider any specific health concerns you have for your dog at the moment, too. Are you trying to address a neck issue? Is your concern related to hip or joint issues? Answering all these questions for yourself up front will help you narrow down your options.

There’s also a lot to be said for knowing your animal’s general preferences. If they’re likely to ignore a headrest, there’s no point getting something with one. If they like an open platform vs. a cradle-type bed, get one of those. In short, suit your animal’s preferences. Even if you’re worried about making sure they have neck support, you can’t do anything more than coax your animal in that direction. There’s no point spending extra on something with a neck bolster if Fido is just going to burrow in to the side of it.
